Our Story
Founded in 2015, Write to Be began as a pen pal program to mentor Haitian girls through empowering letters. Through this simple yet powerful cultural exchange, our founders recognized that mentorship and positive relationships could help inspire the next generation of Haitian girls to take control of their own stories.
Nearly a decade later, Write to Be has blossomed into a comprehensive, community-based support initiative. We currently operate two flagship programs in Les Cayes, Haiti – Fi Ki Fò, an after school program for girls led by local Haitian women, and Fanm Ki Fò, an emergency cash grant for women in the greater community. Fi Ki Fò operates on the campus of Contre le Reconfort Haiti, an organization that provides housing, education, medical care, meals, and clothing for 200 girls and boys in need in Les Cayes, Haiti.
The key to our program’s success is our collaboration with partners and staff within Haiti to teach girls and women essential life and career skills most relevant to their own communities, and to nurture their agency, confidence, and pride.
Haiti's history is illuminated by the strength and resilience of its women. From community organizers to national leaders, Haitian women have long been at the heart of social, political, and economic transformation of the story of the nation. At Write to Be, we believe that with the right support, girls can change the world, change their communities, and become the fearless authors of their own lives.
